After 3 years at the company, I left to I start my PhD at Berkeley, where my path took another unexpected turn as I started receiving calls from a Google recruiter. After politely declining multiple times, I ended up taking a tour of the Google campus and shortly after, accepted their offer.
I spent the next 12 years there, working directly with Marissa Mayer and Eric Schmidt.
In 2017, I decided I needed a change. I donated or sold nearly everything I owned and became a nomad living and working between the Google offices in London, New York and California. I finally left Google in 2018 and settled in Spain on the beautiful mediterranean coast and founded my leadership consulting company.
It's also where I met my husband, Toni. Come to Spain on vacation at your own risk!
This year, I published my first book, Bet On Yourself, with Harper Collins.
I want to share with you the tried-and-true methods to take ordinary opportunities and create something extraordinary. With a few consistent, daily habits you can build a future that exceeds your wildest expectations. No matter the opportunities available to you in your particular community or career stage, there is a path for you.
My first real job was at a startup called Musicware, founded by two brothers who had recently graduated from Harvard Business School. This gave me the foundations I didn’t know I needed and taught me some invaluable lessons. I learned to think on my feet, and understand the importance of tasks that I was given, these skills would come in useful…
I graduated from the University of Washington in 2002 where I co-majored in international studies and Scandinavian studies. I'd never considered tech as a career path. However, in 2002 I took a bet on myself and applied to work at Amazon just a year after the dotcom crash. After a grueling interview process, I started as the most junior person in the company, sat just three feet from Jeff Bezos' desk.
I was born into a military family and spent the first years of my life on Air Force Bases, first in Florida and later in Alaska. From early on, I learnt to adapt to circumstance, to be self-reliant and brave in the face of unpredictable schedules, assignments, and events.
When I was 8 we moved to Redmond, WA, the home of Microsoft. What I didn’t know then is that this would change the course of my life. I grew up in the epicenter of the new digital era with my parents and 6 siblings.
Infinite battery life, no loading time, no data fees.
Wouldn't it be awesome if these were wearable?
Tried-and-true methods to take ordinary opportunities and create something extraordinary.
